Inside Line Promotions – MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 29, 2017) – Harli White was oh so close to capturing her first career 360ci winged sprint car feature victory last weekend.
White led all but the final two laps of an ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints event on Friday during her debut at Crossville Speedway in Crossville, Tenn., before she ended the night with a season-best finish of second place.
“Crossville was on our way to the next Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour race so we stopped in there and had a really good night,” she said. “We went from sixth to win a heat race, which made us the high-points driver and then we drew the No. 1 in the redraw to start the main event on the pole. I led most of the race and with six laps to go I got into a lapped car trying to pass him. It caused a caution. After that my car was bottoming out going into the corners. It really messed up everything and we got passed. If we wouldn’t have had a caution we were gone.”
White continued to lead for a handful of laps following the late caution, but the handling problem allowed another competitor to steal the win in the closing laps.
“It’s a bummer, but we’re fast enough to run up front,” she said. “There were a few national guys at the show so that was a confidence booster.”
The strong result was sandwiched between a pair of Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour events last weekend, beginning on Thursday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark. White placed sixth in a heat race before advancing from eighth to fourth place in the B Main to transfer into the back of the main event.
“We decided to try something different on the car to see if it would work,” she said. “We completely changed it for the B Main and it worked. We got rolling, but got a flat right front tire early in the A Main. Overall, it was a fun track. It was right up my alley with how the track conditions were.”
White was credited with a 22nd-place finish because of the early DNF.
The weekend wrapped up on Saturday at Smoky Mountain Speedway, where White advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race. That earned a spot in the feature redraw, in which she pulled the No. 5 to start the main event fifth.
“I didn’t have a good start in the A Main,” she said. “My car stumbled on the take off and a couple of cars got by me. Then I got a real bad push in turns three and four and went all the way to the top of the track, which allowed more by me. A caution came out and I was running 10th. However, the longer the race went the better my car was working. We were fast. We just have to put all 25 laps together.”
White rebounded from the early problems to post an eighth-place result, which was her fifth top 10 of the season with the series.
White ranks ninth in the championship standings entering a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader this Friday and Saturday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn.
